How to move a commercial gym: a planning checklist
Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Gym Relocation team
Short answer: Moving a commercial gym goes smoothly when the new site is ready first: floor finished, power installed and the layout agreed before any equipment moves. Plan the move in phases or over a weekend, check floor loading for heavy kit on upper floors, and label every machine so it goes straight into its final position and can be tested.

Before the move
- Agree a floor plan for the new site with every machine positioned
- Check floor loading with a structural engineer for upper floors or heavy free-weight areas
- Install flooring, mirrors and power before equipment arrives
- Confirm sockets and circuits for treadmills and other powered equipment
- Check access routes, door widths, lifts and parking at both sites
- Decide what is being sold, recycled or replaced rather than moved
- Tell members the dates and any temporary changes to opening hours
Typical move sequence
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Survey | Both sites checked and the equipment list confirmed |
| Preparation | New site flooring, power and layout completed |
| Phase one | Cardio equipment moved, installed and tested |
| Phase two | Resistance machines, racks and rigs moved and rebuilt |
| Phase three | Free weights, accessories and flooring moved |
| Handover | Final checks, cleaning and any adjustments |
Keeping members training
Many gyms keep part of the old site open while the first phase goes into the new one, or move over a weekend so the gym closes for the shortest possible time. Moving cardio first often makes sense because members use it most.
After the move
- Check every machine is level, secure and working
- Re-run any equipment safety checks or servicing that is due
- Update your risk assessment for the new layout
- Keep a record of equipment locations and serial numbers
